The MK-1 is a combination colored outer vest and fully enclosed carbon dioxide inflatable life preserver. The system is designed to be worn by Navy Maintenance Personnel working on the flight deck of ships supporting aircraft. The vest is provided in different colors to easily identify the various flight deck crew specialists.

The MK-1 life preserver consists of a cardigan style sleeveless outer cover with a snap style front closure and side waist adjustments. For maximum visibility the outer cover incorporates strips of high visibility reflective tape. The outer cover houses a single cell yoke style inflation chamber. The inflatable chamber includes an oral inflating tube which protrudes through the outer cover. The life preserver is fitted with either the standard manually activated carbon dioxide inflation system or optional water activated inflation system. Additionally, optional rescue devices may be fitted to the outer cover.
